John Weymes trains from the beautiful restored and refurbished Ashgill Stables. From there, John continues the family tradition of training racehorses, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather before him. The yard is situated close to both the High and Low Middleham moors and is an ideal location from which to train racehorses.

Ashgill is a small yard of 37 boxes, mainly training horses to race on the turf and all weather, although they do have a number of national hunt horses for the winter months. Since taking out a licence in 2000 John has sent out group placed horse and had runners at Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood and Longchamp in France.

John's aim is to continually improve the quality of the horses rather than the quantity, in doing this he makes himself available to attend the sales at Newmarket , Doncaster , Ireland , Deauville and Keenland. As well as the older horses they currently have 2yo's by Rock Of Gibraltar , Dr Fong , Noverre , Needwood Blade , Verglas and Pyrus in training, and believe they will all ensure their aims and objectives are achieved in 2009. John also attends the foal sales with his partner and assistant Kirsty who also runs a successful breeding and pinhooking operation from a yard near Darlington.

2008 was very frustrating for the stable. Their 2yo's were under a cloud for a long time, so they had to rely on their older horses to keep things going. Welcome Approach, won twice, Just Joey won at Carlisle as well as being placed on numerous occasions, Casino Night added to the tally and then Alamty Express made a little bit of history by winning the first official race at Great Leighs, and then added two more wins later in the season.
Those of you with long memories may remember that John's father, Ernie, trained the last winner at the old Manchester racecourse, so John was very proud to achieve a similar feat at Great Leighs.

John and Kirsty are always looking for new owners and would be delighted to have contact with anybody considering venturing into ownership.
